OVERVIEW OF INDEXES & ABSTRACTS:

INDEXES give bibliographical details of journal articles and some times books published about a particular topic or person. They are generally straightforward to use involving a search for relevant subject key words in an alphabetical sequence.

An ABSTRACT, a short description of the content of the article referred to, may be included in the index entry. If there is no abstract, you may find that a brief explanation of the title is given [usually in square brackets].

Some journals issue their own indexes, usually without abstracts, and there are several journal indexing services which undertake the indexing of large number of titles, in either broad or very specific subject areas.

SPECIALISED INDEXES:

Art Index 1947 - available on CD-ROM
Has references to all aspects of design history. Entries under subject headings and under designers' names.

Design and Applied Arts Index 1987 - available on CD-ROM
Comprehensive international index to design journals. Covers industrial design, textile design and computer aided design. Subjects and designers are in one alphabetical sequence. Contains nearly 60,000 references to articles published in over 300 international design and design-related journals. It also includes 4 additional databases, - International directories of design and crafts courses; Design and crafts organisations; Design and crafts archives; Design and crafts journals.

Fashion Index
Again designers and subjects are in one alphabetical sequence. This publication has not appeared recently.

Design International 1986, 1988 (In Level 3 Office)
This database of design references is published in microfiche format. There are three indexes published 1) by designer 2) by design field 3) by country. Covers product design and textile design as well as design history in general.

GENERAL INDEXES:

More general indexes which cover design, design history and history are:

British Humanities Index 1962 - available on CD-ROM
Indexes articles appearing in newspapers and journals published in Britain. The term "humanities" is interpreted broadly, to include the arts, economics, history, politics and society. Newspaper coverage is restricted to comment and features on current affairs and social and political criticism. The index is arranged alphabetically word by word using specific headings and subheadings which may be the names of persons, countries or concepts.

Historical abstracts- available on CD-ROM
Published in two parts:
A - Modern history (1450 - 1914).
B - Twentieth century history deals with topics within the subject history, followed by world history treated by region.
Fourth issue of each volume contains a subject index.

Humanities Index
Subjects covered include archaeology, history, language, literature and performing arts. Citations of book reviews follow the main body of the index, and authors and subjects are listed in one alphabetical sequence. Has an American bias.

British Technology Index 1970: COMPENDEX
How Current Technology Index covers the technical aspect of design including computer aided design.

World Textile Abstract (fortnightly)
Covers world literature on all aspects of textile technology.

Remember that having found a reference to a periodical article, you will then need to check the list of periodicals to find out whether the University has the particular title and volume that you need. If for some reason a book or article you require from the library stock is not available on the shelves, you may ask at the main library counter for it to be reserved. If you require a book or formal article which the library does not hold then you may obtain either through the Inter-Library loans service.
