Our two games courses give our students the opportunity to spend their third year in industry, offering themthe chance to gain the experience and skills needed for graduate life.
We have a dedicated Placement Unit that helps you develop your CV and interview techniques, to accompany your portfolio.
As well as placements that are secured outside of the university, some of our students apply for the chance to spend the year in the University’s Canalside Studios or pitch to join the Enterprise Placement Year (EPY) programme and start their own independent studio.
What’s in it for me?
Work with the best – The placement unit work with some of the biggest and most well-known companies in the UK and overseas to ensure you have the best possible opportunities during your time at Huddersfield. Our graduates have gone on to work with some of the most famous and respected names in the industry, including Rebellion, CodeMasters, Team 17, Evolution and Rockstar.
Graduate employability – many of our students return from their placement year with sponsorship and the offer of a permanent job from their host company, and this is reflected in our excellent graduate employability record. The University is in the Top 10 in England for paid work placement years in industry (HESA Student Record 15/16), and a lot of this is down to the invaluable work experience students gain whilst studying at Huddersfield.
Not just making the tea! – You might be filling a vacancy in the organisation, be asked to support a particular department or to take on a project that other staff may not have the time or skills for.
All the support you need – you will be allocated a work supervisor and an academic staff member from the University who would normally visit you to discuss your progress at various times throughout the year, so we will be in regular contact.
Enterprise Placement Year
Our EPY scheme offers you the chance to set up your own company (individually or in a group) in the Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre (located within the University’s flagship 3M Buckley Innovation Centre). You’ll gain support from Business Advisors and be allocated a games industry mentor.

Canalside Studios is our commercial games development studio. It is a student-led enterprise supported by a number of academic staff who specialise in games production. Established in 2006, the Studio was one of the first of its kind in the UK and has won many awards and accolades over the last decade.
The studio provides a small number of our students with a placement opportunity; allowing them to work as part of an interdisciplinary team, undertaking research and developing games for a range of platforms. As part of its growing portfolio Canalside Studios has successfully released a number of games on Xbox 360, iOS, Android and Steam.
The hard work, skill and dedication of the students and staff within the studio has established strong working relationships with local and national game development communities. As a result, many of our Canalside graduates have gone on to work with some of the most famous and respected names in the industry, including Rebellion, CodeMasters, Team 17, Evolution and Rockstar.
